HubSpot vs ActiveCampaign: CRM Platform or Automation Tool?
By Mikhail Oskola, Founder & AI Automation Architect · October 26, 2026 · 12 min read
Checked: prices, contact packs, automation and sending limits, the sync app and the migration path: HubSpot on 26 October 2026, ActiveCampaign on 23 October 2026 (migration guide and app directory on 26 October 2026), against the vendors' own pricing pages, product catalog, app marketplace and help centers, in USD.
ActiveCampaign vs HubSpot, in short: ActiveCampaign costs less than HubSpot's list prices from 1,000 to 25,000 contacts, and HubSpot is the one to pick when sales, marketing and service should share one CRM. ActiveCampaign starts at $15 a month for 1,000 contacts, billed yearly. HubSpot is free for 2 users, then charges per seat and per pack of marketing contacts. Checked 26 October 2026.
HubSpot vs ActiveCampaign at a glance
HubSpot sells separate Hubs on one CRM and charges per seat, plus a fee per marketing contact on Marketing Hub. ActiveCampaign sells one marketing automation product priced by contacts, and its deals and pipelines are an add-on. Both read on the vendors' own pages in USD.
The HubSpot column is Marketing Hub, the product you'd compare with an email automation tool, with Sales Hub where the question is the CRM. HubSpot prices were checked on 26 October 2026 on its pricing pages, its Product & Services Catalog, its app marketplace and its knowledge base. ActiveCampaign prices were read on its pricing page and help center on 23 October 2026, and its HubSpot migration guide and app directory on 26 October 2026. Both vendors publish a page comparing themselves with the other; we don't use either as a source.

What's the real difference between HubSpot and ActiveCampaign?
HubSpot is a CRM platform you buy in pieces. ActiveCampaign is a marketing automation tool that can grow a CRM. That difference shows up in how each one bills. Checked on both vendors' pages in October 2026.
HubSpot's Product & Services Catalog lists Smart CRM and six Hubs: Marketing, Sales, Service, Content, Data and Revenue. The catalog says Smart CRM "is automatically included with the purchase of the Starter, Professional, or Enterprise edition of any premium product". HubSpot says Smart CRM "serves as the underlying database that unifies your customer data across your teams." The Starter card reads "Essential marketing, sales, service, content, and data management software" on both the Marketing and the Sales pricing page.
ActiveCampaign's homepage title is "Marketing automation for any business", and its pricing page sells four plans by contact count. Every plan has contact profiles, custom fields and tags. Pipelines, deal records, account records and lead scoring come in the Enhanced CRM add-on, which needs Plus or higher.
So start with where your CRM lives. If your sales team already works in HubSpot, the choice is Marketing Hub or a separate tool synced to it. If you have no CRM yet, ActiveCampaign can be the first one, and HubSpot's free tools include "select CRM functionality".
How much do HubSpot and ActiveCampaign cost by list size?
ActiveCampaign costs less than HubSpot's list prices at every list size we priced. At 10,000 contacts, ActiveCampaign Plus is $189 a month billed yearly; HubSpot Marketing Hub Starter with one seat comes to $410 a month at list price, and Professional to $1,390. Our arithmetic from both vendors' price lists, checked in October 2026.
The two vendors bill on different bases, so read the table with that in mind. ActiveCampaign's pricing page shows only prices billed yearly. HubSpot's catalog gives Marketing Hub Starter at $20 a seat a month and Professional at $890 a month, with marketing contacts sold in packs on top.
HubSpot's packs, from its Product & Services Catalog: Starter includes 1,000 marketing contacts, then charges $50 a month per 1,000 up to 3,000, $45 up to 5,000 and $40 above that. Professional includes 2,000, then charges $250 a month per 5,000 up to 22,000 and $225 per 5,000 from there to 42,000, falling in steps above that. Contacts you don't market to are free. "If you exceed your marketing contacts tier at any time, you will be billed immediately", and the tier "cannot be downgraded until your contract renewal date."
Two HubSpot prices are lower than the list. Starter shows $7 a seat as a promo: "New customers only. Select offers available for a limited time." Professional is $800 a month billed annually. Neither page says whether the discount also covers contact packs, so the table uses list prices throughout. Professional also has a one-time onboarding fee of $3,000.
One ActiveCampaign quirk: at 25,000 contacts its page shows Starter at $391 and Plus at $389. We quote it as read.

What does the first year cost at 10,000 contacts?
For one marketer with 10,000 contacts, ActiveCampaign Plus costs $2,268 in the first year and HubSpot Marketing Hub Starter $4,920. Marketing Hub Professional comes to $19,680 with its onboarding fee. That's our arithmetic at the prices above, before tax and add-ons.
ActiveCampaign Pro, the plan with 3 users, is $375 × 12 = $4,500. Marketing Hub Professional also includes 3 seats: ($890 + 2 × $250) × 12 + $3,000 = $19,680 at list price. On annual billing the base drops to $800 a month, which takes it to $18,600 if the contact packs stay at list.
Neither number covers setup work, data migration or a sales CRM. If deals matter, add ActiveCampaign's Enhanced CRM add-on, whose price isn't published, or HubSpot Sales Hub seats. For agency rates in general, see what an automation agency charges.
| 10,000 contacts, 12 months | HubSpot Marketing Hub | ActiveCampaign |
|---|---|---|
| 1 user, entry plan | Starter: $4,920 (list, monthly), up to 10 actions in email automation | Starter: $1,788 (billed yearly), 5 actions per automation |
| 1 user, unlimited automation actions | Professional: $19,680 incl. $3,000 onboarding (3 seats included) | Plus: $2,268 (billed yearly) |
| 3 users | Starter, 3 seats: $5,400. Professional: $19,680 | Pro: $4,500 (billed yearly) |
Is HubSpot free, and does ActiveCampaign have a free plan?
HubSpot has a free edition and ActiveCampaign doesn't. HubSpot's free tools cover up to 2 users and 2,000 email sends a month with HubSpot branding. ActiveCampaign offers a 14-day free trial with no credit card. Checked October 2026.
HubSpot's catalog describes the free tools as "'lite' versions of select features in our paid products". Free email automation is limited to "1 automated action", and CRM segments to 10 active ones. The same free tools are included in every paid plan, many with higher limits.
After its trial, ActiveCampaign's cheapest plan is Starter at $15 a month for 1,000 contacts, billed yearly. Its pricing page also promises: "Guaranteed results in 30 days or your money back."
Which has better marketing automation, HubSpot or ActiveCampaign?
For the money, ActiveCampaign. Unlimited automation actions cost $49 a month on ActiveCampaign Plus at 1,000 contacts. On HubSpot Marketing Hub, unlimited actions start on Professional at $890 a month. Checked on both pricing pages in October 2026.
ActiveCampaign has multi-step automation on every plan, with 950+ automation recipes. Starter caps each automation at 5 actions and sends email only. Plus removes the cap and adds other channels and sales automation. Site tracking is on every plan; custom event tracking starts on Plus, and the automations map on Pro.
HubSpot Marketing Hub Starter allows "Up to 10 automated actions" in email automation, which HubSpot calls simple marketing automation. Professional adds "Unlimited actions, plus omni-channel marketing automation", up to 300 workflows for 10 teams and up to 5 lead scores. Enterprise raises that to 1,000 workflows and 50 scores, and adds custom events and behavioral event triggers.
Where HubSpot pulls ahead is that the automation sits on the same CRM the sales team uses, so marketing and sales records don't need a sync between two tools. If sales follow-up is part of the journey, that can matter more than the action count.
Does ActiveCampaign have a CRM, and is it enough instead of HubSpot?
Yes, as an add-on. ActiveCampaign's Enhanced CRM adds pipelines, deal records, account records and lead scoring to Plus or higher, at a price it doesn't publish. HubSpot's CRM is the base of every plan, and deal pipelines start on Starter. Checked October 2026.
ActiveCampaign sells two versions of the add-on. The pipelines version covers "Pipeline management, Deal records, Account records, Lead scoring". The sales engagement version adds "Automated 1:1 email" and win probability. Its help center says "You must have a base plan in place before purchasing an add-on package."
On HubSpot, the catalog gives Smart CRM 15 pipelines in total on Starter, 100 on Professional and 350 on Enterprise. Sales Hub Starter, also $20 a seat at list, allows up to 50 workflows "with restricted triggers and actions". Sales Hub Professional, at $90 a seat billed annually or $100 monthly plus $1,500 onboarding, adds sequences and 300 workflows.
Our reading: ActiveCampaign's CRM suits a team where marketing hands leads to a few sellers. If the sales team needs sequences or many pipelines, that's HubSpot Sales Hub, and the email tool becomes a question of syncing to it.
Sending limits, SMS and dedicated IPs
Both cap monthly email by contacts. HubSpot allows 5x your marketing contact tier on Starter, 10x on Professional and 20x on Enterprise. ActiveCampaign allows 10x your contacts on Starter and Plus, 12x on Pro and 15x on Enterprise. Checked October 2026.
At the entry tier that's a real gap. With 2,500 contacts, HubSpot Starter bills you for a 3,000-contact tier and allows 15,000 sends a month. ActiveCampaign Starter at 2,500 contacts allows 25,000.
SMS: HubSpot sells a Marketing SMS add-on for $75 a month on Professional and Enterprise, US customers only, with a 10DLC number and 1,000 message segments. More segments cost $15 a month per 1,000. ActiveCampaign sells SMS as an add-on from Plus up and doesn't publish the price; in the US you must register for A2P 10DLC.
Dedicated IP: HubSpot charges $300 a month, on Marketing Hub Professional and Enterprise. ActiveCampaign charges $750 per IP on any plan, but only with "at least 100,000 active, opted-in, engaged contacts". It doesn't say whether that's a one-time or a recurring fee.
Transactional email is an add-on on both: $600 a month on HubSpot Professional and Enterprise, and on every ActiveCampaign plan at a price we didn't find.
Can you use HubSpot and ActiveCampaign together?
Yes, and HubSpot builds the connector. Its marketplace lists "Data Sync - Sync ActiveCampaign and HubSpot data", "Built by HubSpot", as a HubSpot Certified App. It syncs contacts, companies and deals one way or both ways. Checked 26 October 2026.
The default mappings are ActiveCampaign Accounts to HubSpot Companies, Contacts to Contacts and Deals to Deals. You can filter by any ActiveCampaign field or HubSpot list. Changing those mappings or adding your own needs Data Hub Starter or higher. The listing shows 2K installs and a 3.0 rating from 11 reviews.
Look for it in HubSpot's marketplace. ActiveCampaign's app directory lists third-party apps for HubSpot instead. Outfunnel keeps contacts in a two-way sync with HubSpot and records ActiveCampaign email opens, clicks and unsubscribes in the CRM. Import2 is a migration service (more on moving below). ActiveCampaign also includes API access, webhooks and Zapier on every plan.
A sync app is enough when the same contacts and deals need to match in both tools. You need an automation layer such as Make, n8n or Zapier when a field the app doesn't map has to move, or when a third system joins in, such as billing. We compare those three in Make vs n8n vs Zapier.
Connecting HubSpot to the rest of a stack through the HubSpot API, n8n and Make is part of our HubSpot implementation work.
Moving from ActiveCampaign to HubSpot, or back
HubSpot imports from ActiveCampaign with its own tool, Smart Transfer. ActiveCampaign is on its list of supported apps, next to Mailchimp, Pipedrive, Zoho CRM and others. HubSpot's article was last updated October 2, 2026.
Smart Transfer is available on all HubSpot products and plans, only Super Admins can run it, and "The transfer is one-way from other apps to HubSpot." Moving custom field mappings needs a Data Hub subscription. The first step is an audit that maps the other app's objects and properties to HubSpot and shows the property and record count for each object. After the first sync, "the sync will continue to run in the background to keep transferred records up to date."
Don't count on your automations arriving. HubSpot's article lists workflows among the data some apps can transfer, but doesn't say which apps. The audit step shows what your ActiveCampaign account will carry over. Plan to rebuild the automations as HubSpot workflows and check them before you switch sending off.
Going the other way, ActiveCampaign's help center has a guide, "Migrating contacts from Hubspot" (last updated August 12, 2026). You export contacts from HubSpot, cut the fields you don't need, save the file as CSV and import it. The guide covers contacts only, so plan to rebuild your HubSpot workflows as ActiveCampaign automations. Its terminology map pairs Workflow with Automation and Smart List with Segment, and it warns that "Hubspot has around 200 standard Contact Properties, whereas ActiveCampaign offers six default fields".
ActiveCampaign also lists "Contact migration" among the free services on its pricing page, with basic migration support on Starter and Plus and priority support on Pro and Enterprise. Import2, listed in ActiveCampaign's app directory, is a paid migration service that names HubSpot as a source. It moves a sample of up to 100 accounts with their contacts, deals, notes and tasks first, then quotes the full migration. Before you move either way, read what breaks in a CRM migration.
HubSpot or ActiveCampaign: which one to choose
Choose ActiveCampaign if email automation is the job and the budget is tight. Choose HubSpot if marketing, sales and service should work from one CRM, and you can pay per seat and per contact pack for it. If sales already runs on HubSpot, you can also keep both and sync them.
Not sure which CRM you need in the first place? Take the 6-question CRM picker.
- Choose ActiveCampaign for multi-step automation at the lowest price: Starter is $15 a month for 1,000 contacts, billed yearly, with up to 5 actions per automation.
- Choose ActiveCampaign Plus if you need branching automation and event tracking: unlimited actions from $49 a month at 1,000 contacts. On HubSpot that's Marketing Hub Professional.
- Choose HubSpot if you want to start free: up to 2 users and 2,000 sends a month, with HubSpot branding.
- Choose HubSpot if your sales team needs sequences or many pipelines. That's Sales Hub, on the same CRM as Marketing Hub.
- Check HubSpot's contact packs before you grow your list: on Starter, 10,000 marketing contacts take one seat from $20 to $410 a month at list price.
- Keep both if sales lives in HubSpot and marketing in ActiveCampaign: HubSpot's own Data Sync app keeps contacts, companies and deals matched.

HubSpot's free tools cost nothing for up to 2 users. Checked October 2026.
Is HubSpot free, and does ActiveCampaign have a free plan?+
HubSpot has free tools and ActiveCampaign has no free plan. HubSpot's free edition covers up to 2 users and 2,000 email sends a month with HubSpot branding, with one automated action. ActiveCampaign offers a 14-day free trial with no credit card, then starts at $15 a month for 1,000 contacts, billed yearly.
Is ActiveCampaign better than HubSpot for email automation?+
For the price, yes. ActiveCampaign has multi-step automation on every plan and unlimited actions from Plus, $49 a month at 1,000 contacts. HubSpot Marketing Hub Starter allows up to 10 actions, and unlimited actions start on Professional at $890 a month. HubSpot's advantage is that its workflows run on the full CRM, deals included.
Does ActiveCampaign have a CRM like HubSpot?+
Partly. Every ActiveCampaign plan has contact profiles, custom fields and tags. Pipelines, deals, accounts and lead scoring are the Enhanced CRM add-on, from Plus up, at an unpublished price. HubSpot's Smart CRM comes with every paid Hub, with 15 pipelines in total on Starter, and Sales Hub adds sequences on Professional.
Can HubSpot and ActiveCampaign be used together?+
Yes. HubSpot builds a certified app, ActiveCampaign Data Sync, that syncs contacts, companies and deals between HubSpot and ActiveCampaign one way or both ways. Custom field mappings need Data Hub Starter or higher. Outfunnel, Make, n8n or Zapier are the alternatives. Checked in HubSpot's marketplace on 26 October 2026.
Can I migrate from ActiveCampaign to HubSpot?+
Yes. HubSpot's Smart Transfer lists ActiveCampaign as a supported source, works on all HubSpot plans, and moves data one way into HubSpot after an audit of your ActiveCampaign account. Custom field mappings need Data Hub. HubSpot doesn't say ActiveCampaign automations come across, so plan to rebuild them as HubSpot workflows.
When were these HubSpot and ActiveCampaign prices checked?+
We checked HubSpot's prices, contact packs and limits on 26 October 2026 on its pricing pages and Product & Services Catalog, and ActiveCampaign's on 23 October 2026 on its pricing page, in USD from a US browser. HubSpot's per-list-size totals are our arithmetic. Check both pricing pages before you buy.
